What To Do When The Snow Starts Falling...

Tuesday marked the first official snowfall of the season. I can't believe how much snow we got! Davis said it looked like we were inside a snow globe when we looked out our dining room windows. I agree. It was beautiful the way the giant snowflakes floated gracefully down from the sky. And even better, I got to enjoy it from the comfort of my warm home. The kids, however, had another idea:

If you guessed arms, you win a gold star! Sean came up with a creative use for the bamboo that grows in our front yard. I knew there was a good reason that was there!

The Haircut

A few weeks ago, Jessi decided to cut her own hair. She's the first of my kids to try that approach to getting a haircut, and it worked. Here she is getting her hair fixed by Jayme. It actually wasn't too bad before, she pretty much gave herself layers because she cut off the ends of her braids, but Jayme cleaned it up anyway.

Sledding Fun

This post is a little late, but I'm playing catch-up. Sean took the kids sledding the day after Christmas when we finally had enough snow to go sledding. Here are some highlights from the sledding trip to the awesome sledding hill on Cliffside. Unfortunately, we didn't have any photo evidence of the giant hole Sean and Jessi popped in the tube while they were going downhill. Despite the obliteration of the tube, everyone had lots of fun.

What Season Is It, Anyway?

In case anyone is wondering why I am so grouchy today--

I woke up this morning to angry yelling from my 13 year old. I asked Sean "What's her problem?", to which he replied "Look out the window". At that point, I could pretty well guess what was going on outside but was still horrified when I saw this:


Hello? Last time I checked it was the end of April, and spring should have been underway. Maybe we were time-warped to January? No. I say enough is ENOUGH! NO MORE SNOW! STOP! CEASE! HALT! QUIT! FINISH! (I could go on, but I think you get the idea and and I'm tired of shouting.) I did, however, have a very cute conversation with Jessi.

Jessi: "Mom, why did the weatherman have to say it would snow today?"

Me: "Well, the weatherman isn't in charge of the weather, he just tries to predict what it will be."

Jessi: "Then who decideds what the weather will be?"

Me: "Well, weather is part of nature, so I guess Heavenly Father does."

Jessi: (said very disgustedly) "No he doesn't, it's the WEATHERMAN!"

So, here is my plea to all the weathermen/women out there: Stop forecasting snow!

In the meantime, we had a preschool field trip to the AWHC to see their baby animals. No, it was not cancelled due to inclement weather. And despite the cold and wet, we had lots of fun. Jessi got to hold and pet chicks, ducks, bunnies, calves, and the cutest week-old baby goats. Here are some highlights of Jessi holding a chick and duckling.

Snow Covered Wellsvilles, and Yes, More Deer

Here's another beautiful picture of the Wellsville Mountains that Sean took from our deck today.




And, waking up to find deer in our yard has become a near-daily occurrence here. Today we saw six--four in the yard and two in the bushes. They stayed most of the morning, then moved on to the neighbor's yard. I think they were looking back at the greenhouse where Sean and the Henline's were watching them while Davis and Austin snapped some photos from the living room window.

Where the Wild Things Are

When we moved into our home, we knew there would be wildlife because we had heard stories of deer in the backyard. We had seen many tracks in the morning snow, but, no deer. Last Friday night, we were commenting about how we hadn't seen any deer but lots of tracks, and Jessi said "I see one right there!" Sure enough, in the bushes by the road was a deer. Jessi has good eyesight, because some of us had previously been looking out the window and not seen it. Then, the next morning, we woke to find four deer lounging in the backyard and Jessi was more than happy to pose for a picture. We watched, quietly, for a while and snapped a couple of pictures.

Sean took the picture you see at the side of our blog. He took it a few days ago from the patio in our new home. We are slowly getting things settled and in the meantime are enjoying the beautiful view of the Wellsvilles(regardless of the large pine tree that gets in the way).
